Croacia y Eslovenia comprarán un caza conjuntamente/ Croatia, Slovenia to pursue joint fighter deal

Croatia and Slovenia have agreed to form a new working group to study the possible joint procurement of at least 12 multirole fighters.
Croatia's remaining MiG-21s will reach the end of their service lives by the end of 2011. Two of its aircraft were lost in a recent mid-air collision, which reduced its fleet of the type to 10, but that includes only four operational examples.
The nation had postponed a new fighter tender due to budget constraints, with the Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16, RSK MiG-35 and Saab Gripen having been in contention. It is unclear when a decision could be made under the new bilateral arrangement.
The Slovenian air force has nine Pilatus PC-9Ms modified to carry unguided rockets and pod-housed machine guns. They are also wired to carry Raytheon AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, although Italy now provides air policing cover for the nation.
A joint Croatian/Slovenian air force could be established at the latter's Cerklje air base, with co-operation between the NATO members to also possibly be extended to a joint transport acquisition.

Rusia necesita 150 misiles balísiticos Bulava antes de 2020/ Russia to produce 150 Bulava missiles before 2020

Russia will need to build more than 150 Bulava ballistic missiles in the next decade, an expert on the Russian arms industry said on Friday.
Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine, told RIA Novosti that at least 124 missiles would be required for the eight Borey class nuclear-powered submarines that will enter service over the next decade, and a further 30 or 40 will have to be set aside for test launches.
In order to reach that goal, the capacities of the only plant producing Bulava missiles, near the town of Votkinsk in the Urals, will have to be increased, he said.
The development of the Bulava has been beset by problems, but the latest test launch was successful.
The missile, which was fired from the Dmitry Donskoy submarine in the White Sea on October 7, hit its designated target in the Kura test range in Russia's Far Eastern Kamchatka region.
The Bulava (SS-NX-30), a three-stage liquid and solid-propellant submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), has officially suffered seven failures in 13 tests.
Test launches were put on hold after a failed launch on December 9, 2009, which was caused by a defective engine nozzle.
Two more test launches are planned before the end of the year: one from the Dmitry Donskoy sub, and the other from Russia's newest strategic nuclear-powered submarine, the Borey class Yury Dolgoruky.

The Polish defense ministry is evaluating upgrades to its Su-22 and MiG-29 force to sustain its fighter inventory even as it looks to field a new trainer that also would take on light fighter roles.
Decisions on the Su-22 are most acute, since the first of the aircraft will reach the end of its service life in 2014. The near-term plan is to add 200 flight hours, or two years of operational life. This would allow delaying a decision on what to do next until 2016. Poland currently is reducing its Su-22 fleet to 32 units.
Also in the plan is a far more extensive upgrade of some MiG-29s to add 20 more years (or 4,000 flight hours) to one squadron of 16 fighters. It would keep the fighter in service until 2029.

Lt. Col. Gadi Abudi said Tuesday that the idea was to prevent sensitive information from reaching its "enemies" via Facebook, Twitter and other popular sites.
Abudi said the ban applies only when troops are on base - where their online habits could put military computers at risk. Mobile phone use will also be restricted.
Israel's military has suffered a series of online embarrassments.
Soldiers have posted pictures on Facebook of themselves mistreating detained Palestinians and dancing on patrol. In one case, the military had to cancel an operation after a soldier revealed plans on his Facebook page.

Sikorsky presenta el helicóptero rápido de exploración y ataque S-97/ S-97 Sikorsky unveils S-97 for high-speed scout and attack helo

Building upon the record-breaking X2 demonstrator, Sikorsky has launched the S-97 Raider programme to fly and test a high-speed scout and attack helicopter.
The helicopter, will carry weapons and troops like the Russian Mil Mi-24 Hind, but fly faster than 200kt (370km) in cruise, and 220kts in dash mode.
Unveiling the S-97 programme on 20 October, Sikorsky intends to challenge the US Army's requirements staff as they consider options for replacing the Bell Helicopter OH-58D Kiowa Warrior.
Two weeks ago, Bell Helicopter unveiled a new demonstrator project to re-engine a Kiowa with a Honeywell HTS900-2 engine. EADS North America has teamed with Lockheed Martin to convert an EC145 single-rotor helicopter into the AS645 armed scout.
The S-97 is designed to hover carrying six, fully equipped soldiers. If the payload is only weapons, sensors and fuel, the S-97's hover ceiling rises to 10,000ft.
The aircraft also could be adopted by the US Marine Corps as a high-speed, armed escort for the BellBoeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor.
The S-97 is the first all-new helicopter that Sikorsky has launched since the army cancelled the Sikorsky/Boeing RAH-66 Comanche in February 2004.

_____________________________________________
In a statement to the House of Commons this afternoon, UK Prime Minister David Cameron confirmed much recent press speculation and announced a series of cuts to the Royal Air Force as part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review.
Key amongst the announcements was an immediate cancellation of the Nimrod MRA4 and early retirement of the Harrier fleet. Despite billions being spent on the Nimrod and the aircraft being ready for service introduction, it has become perhaps the highest profile victim of the cuts deemed necessary by the Treasury and will affect many aircrew and families at RAF Kinloss in Moray, who now face an uncertain future.
Early retirement of the Harrier is less of a surprise as the Prime Minister also announced that the conventional carrier variant of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35C, is to be procured for the two new aircraft carriers instead of the Short Take-Off and Landing (STOVL) variant F-35B, although no numbers were confirmed. Navy pilots are expected to be transferred to the US Navy to continue training on F/A-18 Hornets to build up expertise in catapult and arrester wire operations. Harrier operations will cease by April 2011.
In an answer to a question from the Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband, the Prime Minister confirmed that the Chinook order announced in December last year has been reduced from 22 aircraft to 12 but that the planned upgrade to the Puma fleet will go ahead.
(key.aero)
Other cuts are about RAF are:
The Tornado force will also be reduced by two squadrons and one of the two operating bases, either RAF Lossiemouth in Moray or RAF Marham in Norfolk, will be surplus to requirements.
The C-130J is now to be retired ten years earlier than originally planned, the new out-of-service date being 2022 as the A400M force is expected to be complete.
Most surprisingly, the Sentinel R1 ASTOR system will be withdrawn “once it is no longer required to support operations in Afghanistan”. Sentinel has only been in service for a few years but is now expected to be replaced by the three RC-135W ‘Rivet Joint’ aircraft expected to enter service in 2015.

El Portaaviones HMS Ark Royal será retirado de manera inmediata/ HMS Ark Royal to be scrapped

Nuevos Portaaviones británicos:Uno navegará tres años y será vendido/Navy aircraft carrier will be sold after three years and never carry jets

One of the Navy’s new £3 billion aircraft carriers will never carry aircraft and will sail for only three years before being mothballed and possibly sold, ministers will announce on Tuesday.
The Government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review will also confirm that Britain will not have an effective “carrier strike” capability – a working aircraft carrier equipped with fighter jets – until 2020.
Cameron had wanted to scrap one of the two carriers, but the review found that contracts signed by the previous government meant that doing so would end up costing the taxpayer more than going ahead with both. The two carriers will enter service, but one will be mothballed as soon as possible.
He will also announce:
-The replacement for the Trident nuclear deterrent will be delayed by a year until after the general election scheduled for 2015.
-The Army will lose 7,000 soldiers, more than 100 tanks and 200 armoured vehicles. One armoured brigade will be lost and the end of Britain’s 65-year presence in Germany will be signalled.
-The RAF will keep most of its Tornado fighter-bombers but lose at least 5,000 personnel. Two RAF bases will close and be occupied by soldiers returning from Germany.
- The Navy’s fleet of warships will drop from 24 to 19 and it will lose 4,000 personnel. Harrier jump-jets will be scrapped next year but no F35 Joint Strike Fighters will be available to replace them until 2020.
The Navy’s other carrier, HMS Illustrious, will continue to function as a helicopter platform stripped of jets before retiring in 2014.
The first of the new carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth, will enter service in 2016, configured to carry helicopters, not jets. The second new carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, will arrive in 2019. At that point, HMS Queen Elizabeth will be put into “extended readiness”, effectively mothballed indefinitely.
Government sources indicated that the Queen Elizabeth was unlikely to return to service after that
Further angering Navy chiefs, the defence review will confirm that Harrier jump-jets will be abandoned next year but the RAF’s Tornado will be spared to operate in Afghanistan.
Scrapping the Harriers will create a “capability gap” of nine years, with Britain unable to fly fast jets from an aircraft carrier until 2020, when the new JSF enters service.
Government sources tried to play down the significance of the gap, insisting that Britain had agreements allowing RAF jets to fly from overseas bases in most strategically sensitive parts of the world.
Until 2020, Britain is likely to rely heavily on allies with a carrier strike capability, most significantly France.

________________________________________________
The RAFs new Nimrod reconnaissance planes have been grounded over safety worries, leading to fears that the £3.6 billion project might be shelved.
It comes against a background of accidents that led to the loss of 14 servicemen in a mid-air explosion over Afghanistan in 2006 when fuel from the tanks of a Nimrod MR2 leaked into hot air ducts.
The RAF, Ministry of Defence and BAE Systems were castigated in last year’s Haddon-Cave report into the crash, which accused them of putting budget targets ahead of safety.
It came after the entire Nimrod MR2 fleet was grounded by the MoD following further safety fears.
Although the new Nimrod MRA4 is supposed to be a step-change in technology it has stopped flying for the last four weeks after MoD inspectors detected a problem.
One Nimrod had already been handed over to the RAF but the other eight remain with the manufacturers, BAE Systems, until the problem is rectified.
RAF chiefs are now worried that the problem might be used to cancel the programme in the defence review because it was “tarnished” by the image of the earlier Nimrod.
If the project is cancelled it will also have implications for Britain’s nuclear deterrent as the Nimrod has systems that can detect submarines.
The Daily Telegraph reported in August that a Russian hunter-killer submarine had tailed the Trident boats from their Faslane base shortly after the previous Government retired the Nimrod MR2’s earlier this year.

Various media outlets have been reporting that Chinese Air Force Su-27 Flankers and MiG-29 Fulcrums had been exercising with Turkish Air Force aircraft at Konya Air Base recently under Exercise Anatolian Eagle, but China denies sending aircraft to Turkey.
The Chinese Air Force has issued a statement saying that “joint training” has been undertaken with the Turkish military between September 20 and October 4, but that no aircraft were involved.
In April 2009 the Chinese Air Force Commander General Xu Qiliang visited the Turkish Air Force Commander Hassan Al-Aqsa to agree “military exchanges” in the form of joint training. However, the statement goes on to say that the Chinese Air Force has no air-to-air refuelling capability and that Turkey is beyond the range of its fighter aircraft. Clearance to fly over Afghanistan was also never agreed, it said.
